The Honesty Box is back

The amount of eggs that the hens are laying at the moment is a sure sign that spring has sprung.  The rhubarb is shooting up, spuds are chitting, seeds are germinating and the evenings are stretching.

It seems a bit earlier this year, but the time has come to set up out little Surplus Stall at the gate again.

Here you will find fresh eggs, pure honey and other bits and pieces from the garden. 2013-04-27 10.54.53

Just like past years, the old honesty box will be back in action.  I will leave the produce and the honesty box out each morning.  If you want to buy eggs, honey, rhubarb etc, just put the money in the box.

I still laugh when I think about the first year I did this – most people drove in and knocked at the door asking me was I SURE that I wanted them to leave money in a box unattended.  Each time I told them that I had great faith in human nature and they left cheered (and a bit confused no doubt) by this lady who was confident she wouldn’t be robbed.  But you know what?  So what if I was?  I’d suffer the loss of a few eggs and veg.  I had lots more to gain than lose.  My faith in my fellow humans versus losing a few eggs.  No contest.  And I have never been robbed.  Nobody has stolen produce or the money in the honesty box.  True, they wouldn’t get far on the few euro, but that’s not the point.  I put the money towards feed for the chickens and passers by get to enjoy the finest produce from Hunters Lodge.

It’s a win/win situation.

Since I started my little Surplus Stall I have received many emails from people thinking of doing the same thing, but they’re apprehensive.

I tell them to go for it, what have you got to lose…..

The Surplus Stall is situated at the gate of Hunters Lodge on the L7147 off the Wexford Road.  All surplus produce will be left at the gate each morning.

  1. I’m going to make it my business to ‘just be passing by’ as often as possible again this year – not easy when I live near Dublin airport!! But well worth the detour from ‘wherever’ to sample the superb wares on offer! Love to all the Dillons xxxxx
